In Remembrance of Hennie Serfontein, an Anti-apartheid Stalwart of Stature

It was with sadness that we learnt of the passing on – on 24 July 2017 – of Mr Serfontein, one of South Africa’s most outstanding political journalists and activists.

As a journalist, he showed admirable courage in opposing, confronting and, in particular, exposing the secrets of the evil apartheid system under the National Party government. As an activist, he played a sterling role in liaising and setting up talks between the ANC-in-exile and Afrikaner groups who were open to such discussions. He inspired many of the oppressed people and opened the way for
other Afrikaners to stand up and join the liberation movement.

Hennie Serfontein was an Afrikaner of exceptional quality. His words and deeds in the anti-apartheid struggle deserve their rightful place in South Africa’s history of resistance.

The Mayibuye Südafrika Community e.V. wishes to extend its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the late Mr Serfontein. We wish to express our special condolence to his daughter, Anli, who resides in Berlin.

In loving memory,
Mayibuye Südafrika Community e.V.
